OUR BEACHES

Honduras has three areas we should talk about if we refer to its beaches, two in the Caribbean and a third in the Pacific Ocean. To start talking about this beautiful country we must review the most interesting beaches are those in the Bay Islands in the Caribbean Sea, it occupies the northern coast of the country. In the south, has the Gulf of Fonseca, natural outlet to the Pacific.

THE BAY ISLANDS
It is one of the 18 departments into which the Central American nation of Honduras is divided. The departmental capital is Roatan, on the island of Roatán.
The department covers a total surface area of 250 km² and, in 2013, had an estimated population of 71,500 people. It comprises three geographically separate groups:
° Islas de la Bahía with the main islands:
-Roatán -Guanaja -Útila
° Cayos Cochinos
° Swan Islands
Cochinos Cays
Are a group of two small islands (15°58′18.99″N 86°28′31.34″W) (Cayo Menor and Cayo Grande) and 13 more small coral cays situated 30 kilometers northeast of La Ceiba on the northern shores of Honduras. Although geographically separate, they belong to the Bay Islands department and are part of Roatán municipality.

CORAL REEF, CAYOS COCHINOS
The population numbered 108 at the 2001 census. The total land area measures about 2 km².
The islands are a Marine Protected Area and are managed by the Honduran Coral Reef Foundation. The coral reef here is part of the world's second largest coral reef system known as the Meso-American Barrier Reef. There is a scientific research station on Cayo Menor, the smaller of the two main islands in the system.

The island was formerly known as Ruatan and Rattan. It is approximately 77 kilometres (48 mi) long, and less than 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) across at its widest point. The island consists of two municipalities (out of a total of four in the department):
-
José Santos Guardiola in the east (named for the former president of Honduras) and
-
Roatán (also including the Cayos Cochinos) further south in the west.

Tela
Officially named Parque Nacional Jeannette Kawas, it is commonly referred to as Parque Nacional Punta Sal, and is located on the western end of the Bay of Tela.
Punta Sal Beach
Geographically, Punta Sal National Park consists of a long narrow peninsula with a very beautiful cove rightfully named Puerto Escondido (Hidden Port); a large lagoon called the Laguna de Los Micos; and a narrow sand bar between the Los Micos Lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. One of the major attractions of Punta Sal is the Garifuna community of Miami, one of the last two truly authentic Garifuna communities that persist to this day in Honduras (the other one is Chachahuate at Cayos Cochinos). The Miami community is located on the narrow sand bar between Los Micos and the Caribbean Sea, and believe me, it’s the opposite of what Miami, Florida is all about!
